Indonesia, which consists of more than 17,000 islands, has been known as the “Spice Kingdom” for its rich production of spices since ancient times. Spices firmly occupy an indispensable position in Indonesian cuisine, and among them, turmeric has a special place.

According to legend, Sakyamuni asked his disciple Ananda, who had achieved enlightenment, to go to Ceylon to teach the Dharma. After the teaching was completed, Ananda decided to design a unified set of cassocks. Soon, he made it out of white cloth and gave it to a local princess who believed in Buddhism to rinse it. The princess felt that white could not express the feeling of the Buddha’s light, so she found turmeric near the place where the Buddha taught and used its juice to dye the cassock yellow. Later, people learned to use turmeric juice for dyeing, and this practice spread.
